India’s smart city concept has gained popularity, and it is one of the buzzwords. The concept of a smart city in India may seem like a faraway dream considering the current state of affairs.

Basically, a smart city is one that uses information and technology to improve operations, share information with the public, and provide better administration for its citizens.

To put it simply, smart cities are places that combine technology and data analysis to enhance the quality of life for their residents. It focuses on enhancing city activities and boosting economic growth, among other objectives.

In a smart city, various characteristics are reflected, including a technology-based infrastructure, environmental initiatives, an effective and functional public transportation system, a city plan based on confidence and progress, and people who can live and work in a city.

About GIFT City

GIFT City, a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), was approved as the location of an IFSC in April 2015 by the Government of India.

GIFT City International Financial Services Center (IFSC) is essential for establishing an efficient platform for inbound and outbound foreign exchange transactions.

As the first global financial and IT service hub in India, GIFT city is providing global financial and IT services. There are 886 acres of land under development with the latest technology and global best practices in infrastructure. Furthermore, sustainable practices are being used in its development.

GIFT City’s proposed vertical development consists of 62 million square feet, of which 14 million square feet will be residential. Residential space will make up 22 percent and commercial development will make up 67% of the total development.

Numerous awards and accolades have been presented to GIFT City for its futuristic infrastructure development. GIFT City has built a number of innovative infrastructure systems, including the District Cooling System (DCS), Automated Waste Collection System (AWCS), and Underground Utility Tunnel that make it one of the world’s most advanced smart cities.

In this article, we will look at every feature of GIFT city in detail in order to understand how it functions as a smart city.

Highlights of GIFT City

Integrated Development

It consists of 62 million square feet of built-up area, including office spaces, residential apartments, schools, hospitals, hotels, clubs, retail spaces and various recreational facilities, which makes it a true “Walk to Work” City.

This integrated development covers 886 acres. In addition to an exclusive Domestic Area, GIFT City consists of a conducive Multi-Service SEZ (Special Economic Zone). A Vertical City will optimize land use for development by consuming less land.

Water Supply

Water management has been adopted in the city through a reduction of 35% in potable water and the treatment and reuse of 100% of wastewater. The concept of Zero Discharge City has also been applied.

There are three types of water sources: Narmada Main Canal, Recycling and Reuse of Wastewater, and Rainwater Harvesting.

Power

For GIFT, the Power Distribution Licensee is GIFT Power Company Ltd., which is a 100% subsidiary of GIFTCL. Underground cables will carry all the electricity, and its power grid will be designed by ABB Groups of Switzerland. GSPL’s existing gas pipeline system supplies gas to the city.

Solid Waste Management

In recognition of the importance of solid waste management in the country, GIFT City has installed an automated waste collection and segregation plant.

Plasma gasification will be used to treat all of the city’s waste, which will then be automatically gathered and vacuumed through underground pipes.

District Cooling System

By installing District Cooling Systems in GIFT City, it will be possible to reduce the operational costs by 30-40% and avoid the cost of installing coolers in every building.

The purpose of this project is to provide uninterrupted, energy-efficient, and sustainable district cooling air conditioning for GIFT city’s residents. There are 1,80,000 TR of total planned district cooling capacity.

Utility Tunnel

As for vast infrastructure systems, GIFT has developed the vision of a “DIGGING FREE CITY”. This is the method of storing all utilities into a tunnel across the city so that there is no need to excavate streets to repair, maintain, renovate and upgrade any utilities in the future. The tunnel is designed to provide a smooth access, separate utilities, provide drainage, and provide lighting along with other long-term concerns, such as security and maintenance.

Certification

One of India’s only smart cities and International Financial Services Centres (IFSC), GIFT City has also been certified by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) as “Green Master Planning & Design and Implementation of GIFT City’s Phase I Development”.

As the first Greenfield Smart City to receive IGBC Green Cities Platinum certification, GIFT City is the first of its kind in India. In sync with their environmental and sustainability goals, global and Indian companies consider GIFT City an ideal location.

What are The Benefits?

Smart cities will come with a variety of advantages, among which are world class infrastructure, single window clearance, and an integrated social ecosystem. As a result, business costs will be reduced. Consequently, many job opportunities will be created.
