As per the National Building Code of India (NBC), residential buildings are defined as constructions “in which sleeping accommodation is provided for normal residential purposes, with or without cooking or dining or both facilities, except any building classified under Group C.”

Based on this definition, residential buildings can be classified into several categories such as lodging or rooming houses, one or two-family private dwellings, dormitories, apartment houses or flats, and hotels.

  5. Villas: These are stately homes that have been popular among the wealthy for centuries. They can range from small, single-story houses to large, multi-story homes with swimming pools, gardens, and driveways.
  6. Condominiums / Housing Complexes / Societies: These are individual units that share common areas such as rooftops, clubhouses, swimming pools, playrooms, and outdoor areas. They are co-owned equally by all the condominium owners.
  7. Farmhouses / Second homes: These are vacation houses and farms located far from urban crowds, and are becoming increasingly popular as more and more people seek a retreat from the city.
  8. Huts: These are simple shelters made of natural materials like mud, wood, bricks, and leaves, and are commonly found in rural and tribal areas of India.
  9. Eco-friendly Homes: With the increasing awareness of the need to minimize environmental impacts, more and more Indians are upgrading their homes to incorporate sustainable technologies, such as solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and green roofs.
