What is The Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation?

In India, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation was responsible for reducing urban poverty, providing housing, and promoting employment.

The Ministry coordinates with Indian central ministries, state governments, and central sponsors on national policy decisions. It was created in 2004 after splitting off from the Ministry of Urban Development.

Urban development and housing as well as urban poverty alleviation were merged into the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in 2017.

Business Allocated to the Ministry

Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation is responsible for the following activities

  • Development of housing policies and programs (except rural housing), implementation review of the Plan Schemes, collection and dissemination of housing data, building materials and techniques, general measures for reducing building costs, and nodal responsibility for National Housing Policy.
  • International Cooperation and Technical Assistance in the field of Housing and Human Settlements, including the United Nations Commission for Human Settlements.
  • The Urban Development and Slum Clearance schemes, including the Jhuggi and Jhonpri Removal Schemes and international technical assistance to resolve these problems..
  • National Cooperative Housing Federation.
  • Urban Employment and Urban Poverty Alleviation programs, as well as other programs, have been implemented over time.
  • The matters of Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) other than those pertaining to urban infrastructure.
