There is a high possibility that you might be residing in an urban city. It is undoubtedly true that India is a land of villages, but there have been enormous changes in the urban landscape in the last five decades.

As the pace of urbanization has increased, it has played a crucial role in the development of the country. However, at the same time, it has created a number of unique challenges for the nation. The development of the urban sector was deemed imperative in this scenario.

In this context, the National Urban Housing and Habitat Policy 2007 (NUHHP-2007) was formulated. Taking into account the changing socio-economic profile of urban areas and the growing need for shelter and related infrastructure, the policy promotes various types of public-private partnerships with a special focus on the urban poor, as part of the goal of “Affordable Housing for All”.

As a part of the National Urban Housing & Habitat Policy (NUHHP), 2007 the focus is on ‘habitat’ with a ‘Regional Planning Approach,’ and the role of the government as a ‘facilitator’ and ‘regulator’ is also further enhanced.

Furthermore, the Policy emphasizes providing land to EWS/LIG groups in new housing projects. In the Policy, the Government recognises the importance of retaining its role in social housing so that affordable housing can be made available to the EWS and LIG groups of the population.

In order to accelerate the growth of the housing sector and to create sustainable habitat, the policy seeks to create strong partnerships between the public, private, and cooperative sectors.
